In October, 2011, Marsha Carson, LEED-AP, ARCSA-AP, CLIA, CGIA, LI17105, was elected by the Dallas Irrigation Association Board of Directors to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Texas Turf Irrigation Association (TTIA) beginning in January 2012 for a two year term. The Board of Trustees of the TTIA is comprised of representatives from every local irrigation association across the state and represents the irrigation industry at the state level. TTIA efforts were key in accomplishing the passage of important House Bills which promote and protect the integrity of the industry. John C. Nowotny of Winter Haven, FL recently demonstrated professional competency by successfully completing the CERTIFIED ARBORIST examination administered through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and the local chapter of the ISA.
The purpose of the ISA Certification Program is to improve the level of knowledge and standard of practice within the tree care profession. It is designed to assist the public in identifying those professionals in arboriculture who have demonstrated, through a professionally developed examination and education program, a thorough knowledge of tree care practices. All Certified Arborists carry a wallet identification card for verification. * Certification is valid for three years. The ISA program tests and certifies an individual’s knowledge in the field of Arboriculture.
The International Society of Arboriculture is a scientific and educational organization devoted to the dissemination of information in the care and preservation of shade and ornamental trees.

Judy Jensen, CLIA, CGIA, LEED-AP achieved Certified Irrigation Designer (CID) Commercial accreditation through the Irrigation Association (IA) in July 2011. To achieve this certification, candidates must have 3 years minimum irrigation experience or education, pass a series of three written exams on general irrigation and specialty topics, agree to a code of ethics established by the IA board and submit ongoing continuing education credits through the IA bi-annually.

To receive this certification from the Irrigation Association, a candidate must have 1 year of verifiable experience in the irrigation field, be accepted as a candidate by the Irrigation Association. The candidate must score a passing grade on the examination and perform field tests on a golf course irrigation system to determine efficiency, as well as how to combine plant water use, soils and local weather data to calculate accurate watering schedules for irrigation systems. Most importantly, a Certified Golf Irrigation Auditor deals directly with the issue of wise water use on the landscape.

JC Nowotny, CLIA recently passed the Florida FNGLA (Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association) Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) program. The FNGLA Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) program is the industry's only standard for measuring horticulture knowledge on everything from plant and pest identification to landscape management. Candidates must pass a comprehensive four-part online written exam to demonstrate knowledge about plant identification, disease and insect control, plant biology and landscape management. FCHP promotes professionalism among horticulture professionals, including nursery, greenhouse, landscape and retail garden center employees. The FCHP program has been in existence since 1984 with more than 1,100 certified professionals statewide.

Marsha L. Carson, CLIA, CGIA, ARCSA-AP, LEED-AP hosted Workshop Session titled: "Water Session - Efficient Outdoor Water Use" at the GovEnergy Conference at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, TX August 15th-18th. Workshop sessions are led by subject experts, offering detailed information to support daily operations as well as long-term energy management goals affecting federal agencies. The conference focused primarily on helping federal agencies meet the new Executive Order 13423, which mandated reduced energy and water consumption, by 2% annually through 2015, and was attended by Federal Government Employees from all departments and divisions from all over the country.

Aaron Smith, ASIC and JC Nowotny, CLIA coordinated a pilot project in Highland County which involves bringing a mobile irrigation lab to 35 homeowners residing in the city of Sebring. The lab will evaluate residential irrigation systems and develop customized recommendations on irrigation equipment, management practices, Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ and irrigation schedules. The City was the first in the country to host the traveling exhibit, which highlighted Climate, Recycling, Food & Composting, Renewable Energy, and Water Resources.

Todd Mohler, RLA attended the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association's (ARCSA) annual National conference "Rainwater - The Forgotten Resource" September 14-16, 2009 in Decatur, Georgia. The conference was planned for Decatur, near Atlanta, due to its location at the heart of our nation's growing concern over dwindling water supplies. ARCSA is dedicated to educating the public on how to harvest and use rainwater and, in turn, reduce the demand for treated water.

Marsha Carson attended the Basic Irrigation Class in June and took the state licensing exam in July for the Texas Irrigators License. She received her license from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) on Sept. 22, 2008, License No. 17105. The state of Texas defines a Licensed Irrigator as: one who can sell, design, consult, install, maintain, alter, repair, or service an irrigation system including the connection of such system to a private or public, raw or potable water supply or any water supply. This includes water wells and unincorporated areas of the state.To pass the licensing exam and become a Licensed Irrigator you must be proficient in plot plan development, head layout, zoning & pipe sizing. Licensed Irrigators must also demonstrate proficiency in industry terminology and installation methods, cross connection control and associated equipment, reading blueprints, wiring standards, calculating wire size, reading pressure loss charts, how elevation affects pressure, hydraulics. Every irrigation project completed in the state of Texas must be done so under the direct supervision of a Licensed Irrigator.

Todd Mohler and Marsha Carson recently attended the ARCSA workshop and passed the exam for American Rainwater Catchment System Association-Accredited Professional which is based on the US Green Building Council's process for Rainwater Catchment Systems Accredited Professional. The purpose of accreditation is to recognize individuals who have demonstrated a competency of general knowledge and experience to provide advice and/or assistance in the use of rainwater capture and harvesting. To date ARCSA has 115 accredited Professionals.

Todd Mohler attended a Green Roof Symposium at the University of South Florida in Tampa. It is the first Green Roof event in the state. The workshop featured local and national experts in the design and implementation of green roofs. Regional case studies were featured and focus group sessions allowed attendees the chance to identify with relevant city officials dealing with policy obstacles. The event was sponsored by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.

This demonstration garden was recently installed at the Orange County Administration Building on the corner of Jackson Street and South Rosalind Avenue in downtown Orlando. The low-volume drip irrigation system design to irrigate this garden was provided by Masuen Consulting LLC.
